We are excited to announce that The Art of Drag: Queer Horror Edition will be held Saturday, June 22nd, from 7 pm to 10 pm in the gallery at 623 N. Chaparral Street. Proceeds from The Art of Drag will support K Space Contemporary and the Coastal Bend Pride Center. By having this event we hope to bring the community together while having a fun night downtown! This is an 18+ event!

Why Queer Horror? The horror genre was one of the first genres to embrace queerness and can turn real-life issues into terrors and nightmares. The beginning of queerness in horror was not the best when it came to representation, however, creating stereotypes like the "overly effeminate, weak man" and the "bury your gays" trope. Nowadays with modern horror, queer people are no longer trapped by these and can become much more.

 

The horror genre itself is often overlooked and underrepresented in the film industry as well. As of 2024, only 6 horror films have ever been nominated for the Academy Awards Best Picture and so far 1 of them has actually won the award, "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991).

 

The Art of Drag: Queer Horror Edition will be an exciting night! This event will be featuring 4 fabulous drag performers, amazing music from DJ Crybabyy and DJ JELLOxSHOT, a colorful photo op, drinks, and local vendors selling pride merchandise!
