"Windows to the Coastal Bend"
Painted by the 2025 K Space staff and Community Members
K Space Contemporary was honored to be selected as the community partner for the 2025 Mural Fest. The mural "Windows to the Coastal Bend" was designed by artist Emily Quintanilla and was brought to life from K Space Staff and community members. The mural design features over 50 stained glass windows that line the bulkhead on South Chaparral from Born St to Broadway Ct. The mural stretches around 580 feet long and is one of the largest communtiy projects K Space has undertaken.
The design came at the request of a former Executive Director of the Downtown Management District, and long time Corpus Christi Advocate, Alyssa Barrerra Mason. Alyssa impacted the growth and development of downtown so much during her time here. To honor her request each of these stained glass windows was designed to represent symbols and icons of the Coastal Bend.
Over the course of one month, K Space hosted 9 communtiy paint days open to all ages. Community participants were invited into the galleries and studio to learn our mural process and help contribute to the project. Community members were able to come and contrbute to a large-scale public mural without having to be outside in the elements due to the unique mural process we use.
The mural technique we use is the Philidelphia Mural process and consists of priming a woven fabric, Polytab, in 5 ft sections and enlarging and tracing the design onto the fabric. The sections are then labeled with their appropriate colors making the painting process more accessible to the community. After the fabric is painted, it is glued to the wall using a heavy duty adhesive and then sealed for proteciton. The murals created with this technique have the ability to last over 30 years without fading.
