Pretty Moxie

September 6th- October 4th

Pretty Moxie is an artist collective composed of Ashley Burnett, Mariana Ruvalcaba Cruz, and Saffron Williams. Their work deals with themes of the female body and identity through the lens of fantasy and surrealism. In their debut group exhibition, Pretty Moxie presents narrative ceramic work paired with prints that construct narratives about their experiences of womanhood, belonging, personal journeys, and their lives as female artists.

Saffron Williams is a multimedia artist working in both printmaking and ceramics. Her work explores her unique relationship with womanhood, and questions the symbols and aesthetic choices used to define gender roles. Incorporating fiber art, craft, and fine art techniques, she explores the way art can be used to elevate, define, and enforce ideals. She is currently pursuing her MFA at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi.

Ashley Burnett is a multimedia artist who uses a combination of printmaking, ceramics, and elements of craft to create fantastical, allegorical narratives. Drawing on personal experiences, she creates narratives about maturing into womanhood, while growing up in the Southern Baptist community. Through the use of mythological creatures and objects, she subverts elements from the Bible to begin weaving her own mythology. Burnett is a current MFA candidate at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi.

Mariana Ruvalcaba Cruz is a multidisciplinary artist that works primarily with Ceramics and printmaking. Her work draws from a constant sense of 'being in the middle,' suspended and uprooted from a sense of belonging. She creates a visual language that defies conventional boundaries and challenges the established reality. By merging, distorting, and manipulating the human form alongside natural elements, she blurs the line between the tangible and the imagined. In this 'middle ground,' she crafts hybrid creatures that give a physical form to her experience with change, displacement, transformation, and self-discovery. She is currently a MFA candidate at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi.
